For me, preaching is more than the words of the sermon. Preaching is a Holy Spirit-inspired, incarnational event in which the congregation receives the message through the experience of the preaching moment. The Word becomes flesh and lives among us in the act of preaching.
My preaching centers on Scripture. And I bring to Scripture, reason, traditions of the church, especially our sacramental traditions, my own life experience, and the experiences of the congregation. My preaching is often personal in its content and presentation. I share from personal experience, and I rarely preach from behind a pulpit. In preaching, I stand in the place of greatest vulnerability before the people and God.
